The 2018 World Cup produced its first classic after Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to deny Spain in a incredible showpiece in Sochi. Under-pressure Spain had just produced a stunning comeback to lead their Group B rivals 3-2 when Ronaldo was handed an 88th minute free-kick.
And he responded with a trademark goal to complete a heady night of drama and glory. While Ronaldo stole the headlines after his incredible performance, many also discussed something they saw him do ahead of the fixture.
When the two teams lined up on the pitch to sing their national anthems, each of the Portugal players could be seen singing their hearts out.
The players stood in a straight line, all of them looking forward, except for Ronaldo. He faced sideways reports the GiveMeSport.com.
Interestingly, Willy Caballero did exactly the same thing ahead of Argentina’s clash with Iceland on Saturday, which ended 1-1. So what were the players up to?
According to the publication, they were standing towards their country’s flag as a sign of respect and patriotism. And people who noticed their position took to Twitter to comment.
One stated: “Caballero standing in a strange position during the Argentinean anthem. Protesting maybe?“ But another was quick to explain and replied: “Facing the flag.”
Similarly, another tweet seemed to criticise Willy Caballero. One user wrote: “Willy Caballero can't even point in the right direction during the anthem. Doesn't bode well for Argentina.”
Again, they were quickly corrected with another reply to it: “In fact he was the only one facing to the national flag.”
