Richard Dalton had been by Diana side everyday for 12 years has revealed the extent they had to go to to keep the change a secret from the world.
And in a rare interview with Town and Country magazine he explained the reason it was such a big deal.
The hairdresser, who’s clients included models such as Christy Turlington, Jane Seymour, Sophia Loren and Jerry Hall, said: “Whatever I did to her hair became front page news.”
To keep the news of a change in haircut out of any form of attention, they would go to painstaking lengths.
So for example, when Prince Charles’ then-wife wanted a shorter cut for a trip to Africa, it was done in gradual stages over a matter of weeks.
Dalton added: "We had to be very careful. We had to do it one-fourth of an inch at a time over several weeks."
The hairdresser, who moved to live in the US six years before her death, gives little away out of respect to her memory and towards her sons.
But speaking about general matters of Royal style, he allowed himself to open up more, reports the publication. Watching Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle, brought back a flood of memories.
Speaking about Meghan, he added: “Her hair looked very elegant. It not only complemented the gown, but also balanced the tiara and veil.
“What people don’t realise is the magnitude of that monarch length veil and the significance of the tiara. It’s a crown jewel, and must be respected and protected. You have to be extremely careful and gentle with it, and absolutely no hairspray or styling product can touch the stones.”
Speaking about the tributes to Diana at the wedding, he added: “From the vacant chair beside Prince William to Diana’s favorite hymn, ‘Guide Me, O Thy Great Redeemer,’ which was sung at both her wedding to Prince Charles and at her funeral, she was there in many ways. And then there were the flowers—white roses and lily of the valley. Those were her favourites.”
Richard initially cut Diana’s sister’s hair before meeting the young future princess, eventually leaving his job to work with her full time.
The stylist even went on to give Princes William and Harry their first haircuts. However, according to reports, the chair beside Prince William was left empty because it was in front of the Queen's seat.
